Kanye west graduation album lyrics12/28/2022 ![]() West declares "here's another hit" on "Barry Bonds," but the collaboration with Lil' Wayne is marred by a weak chorus and indulgent lyrics, even for West. On Graduation, those misfires are concentrated in the middle of the album. On "Big Brother" he acknowledges living in the shadow of an older brother figure, which West has admitted is Jay-Z: ("Sibling rivalry, only I could see / It was the pride in me that was driving me / At the Grammys I said I inspired me / But my big brother who I always tried to be").īecause West takes lyrical and musical risks on nearly every song, there are bound to be misfires. "How I suppose to stand out when everyone get dressed up / So yeah at the Grammy's I went ultra Travolta / Yeah that tuxedo mighta been a little gweedo / But with my ego, I can stand there with a Speedo" (from "The Glory"). What's unexpected about Graduation is the heightened level of honest introspection and self-awareness. Masterful sampling and big-name collaborations are more or less expected from a Kanye West album. The breadth of his collaborations stretches to include John Mayer (on the breezy yet lyrically substantial "Bittersweet Poetry," a hidden track about a destructive relationship) and Coldplay's Chris Martin (on "Homecoming," a song that rewards repeat listens). The appealingly jovial "Good Life" (which samples Michael Jackson's "Pretty Young Thing") seems destined for generous radio airplay. ![]() "Stronger" brilliantly melts the Daft Punk techno influence with West's rhymes. The Kanye West trademarks of expertly sampling older songs and collaborating with a diverse range of artists are both apparent here. On his latest album, Graduation, West characteristically delivers clever lyrics littered with pop culture references on glossy tracks that boast obvious high-production values. In the past, West desperately needed confirmation of that genius by having the highest sales, the most fans and more awards than any other musicians. West is absolutely convinced he's a genius. Kanye West is perhaps the only person in the music industry who can justify his extreme megalomania.
